Demetris Kletou

Marine Biologist, Director, Marine & Environmental Research (MER) Lab

Session details are being updated.

About

Dr Demetris Kletou is a marine biologist with a BSc in Biological Sciences, majoring in Marine Biology, and an MSc in Marine Biology/Ecology from Florida Atlantic University, USA. He obtained his PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Plymouth, UK, where his research focused on human impacts on oligotrophic marine ecosystems, with emphasis on sensitive habitats, invasive species, ecological monitoring and mitigation approaches for marine pressures.

His research interests focus on how human activities affect marine biodiversity, ecosystem structure and sensitive habitats in the Eastern Mediterranean. His work includes research on marine protected areas, marine ecosystems, non-indigenous species, aquaculture impacts, marine litter, underwater noise, climate-related pressures, impact mitigation and ecosystem restoration. He has contributed to approximately 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

In 2008, he founded Marine & Environmental Research (MER) Lab Ltd in Cyprus, where he serves as Director. Through MER, he has coordinated numerous applied marine research, environmental assessment and ecological monitoring projects across Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, linking scientific research with environmental management, public authorities, industry needs and sustainable marine development.

Since 2020, Dr Kletou has been a Visiting Lecturer at Frederick University, Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce. His teaching draws directly on his research and professional experience, bringing real case studies from marine environmental monitoring, impact assessment, shipping, aquaculture, conservation and sustainability into the classroom. He teaches Marine Ecosystems, Threats and Management (BSc elective), Shipping and the Environment (BSc required), and Green Shipping and Sustainability Management (MSc elective).
